Corning's AI Fiber Deals: Is GLW Stock Still a Buy?

💡 Puntos Clave

Corning has become a key AI infrastructure supplier, but its surging stock price now carries significant valuation risk.

What Happened: A 175-Year-Old Glassmaker's AI Boom

Corning, the 175-year-old glass manufacturer, saw its stock jump as much as 10% after announcing a multibillion-dollar, multiyear deal with Amazon. The agreement will supply optical fiber and connectivity for Amazon's expanding U.S. data centers and is expected to create 1,000 manufacturing jobs. This news follows a remarkable 114% surge in Corning's stock price this year.

The Amazon deal is part of a string of major wins for Corning in the AI infrastructure space. In January, Meta Platforms agreed to buy up to $6 billion of optical solutions from Corning over several years. Then, in May, Nvidia named Corning its optical partner for next-generation AI infrastructure, backing the partnership with a $500 million investment that could grow to $3.2 billion.

Corning's optical communications sales, which include the fiber used to connect chips inside AI data centers, rose 36% year-over-year in the first quarter to $1.85 billion. This marks the company's eighth consecutive quarter of year-over-year growth in this segment.

Driven by this momentum, Corning has extended its long-range financial plan. The company now targets a $40 billion annualized sales run rate by the end of 2030, doubling the $20 billion run rate it expects to achieve by the end of 2026.

Why It Matters: The Optical Backbone of AI

This matters because Corning is becoming the essential, yet often overlooked, backbone of the AI data center build-out. While Nvidia's chips process the data, Corning's fiber optics move that data between chips. As AI clusters grow larger and more complex, the demand for faster, more power-efficient data transfer explodes, directly benefiting Corning.

The company's technological edge is a key factor. Its new Multicore Fiber packs four light-carrying cores into one strand, offering four times the density of standard fiber. This allows data center operators to achieve the same capacity with up to 75% fewer physical connectors, a critical advantage for scaling AI infrastructure efficiently.

Financially, the deals are translating into strong performance. Corning's first-quarter core earnings per share grew 30%, and its core operating margin hit 20.2%—a target it reached a full year ahead of schedule. This operational excellence supports its ambitious sales targets.

However, the stock's massive rally introduces a major risk: valuation. After more than doubling, Corning now trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of about 90. This rich multiple prices in years of flawless, high-growth execution, leaving little room for error or a slowdown in the AI capital expenditure cycle.

Corning is a compelling but high-risk story; consider only a small position if you believe the AI build-out will far exceed expectations.

The business fundamentals are undeniably strong, with leading technology and marquee customer wins. However, the current stock price demands perfection, making it vulnerable to any hiccup in growth or a sector-wide slowdown.

If you hold GLW, your position has likely benefited greatly, but it's now highly exposed to the sentiment and spending cycles of the AI infrastructure sector. Investors with exposure to tech or semiconductor ETFs may have indirect, smaller exposure to Corning's success through its partnerships with NVDA, AMZN, and META. For those not invested, chasing the rally here carries significant valuation risk.
