Alphabet's $200B Bet: Cloud Growth vs. Depreciation

💡 Puntos Clave

Alphabet's massive capex will depress earnings from 2027 onward, but strong cloud growth currently justifies the spending.

Alphabet Raises Capex Guidance to $200 Billion

Alphabet raised its 2026 capital expenditure guidance to $195-$205 billion, up from $180-$190 billion. The company spent $44.9 billion on capex in Q2 alone, leading to negative free cash flow of $5.9 billion.

Most of the debate has focused on cash flow and buybacks, but the bigger story is depreciation. When Alphabet buys servers, the cost is spread over six years as depreciation. CFO Anat Ashkenazi revealed that 60% of infrastructure investment goes to servers, with the rest to data centers and networking equipment.

At the midpoint of guidance, Alphabet will spend $200 billion in 2026. With 60% on servers, that's $120 billion depreciating over six years, adding $20 billion in annual depreciation from 2027 onward. Data centers depreciate over 40 years, adding smaller but longer-lasting charges.

Depreciation is already rising. Other cost of revenues grew 22% year over year to $29.8 billion, driven partly by depreciation. R&D expense grew 32%, also due to AI talent and depreciation. Ashkenazi warned that infrastructure investment will continue to pressure the P&L.

Why Depreciation Matters for Investors

The depreciation charge will hit earnings on a fixed schedule, regardless of revenue growth. From 2027, Alphabet will face an additional $20 billion in annual depreciation from 2026 purchases alone, stacking on top of prior years' charges.

For context, Alphabet's Q2 operating income was $40.8 billion. The servers bought this year will eventually subtract roughly half a quarter's worth of profit every year for six years. This could compress margins if revenue growth slows.

However, the spending is driving impressive growth. Revenue rose 24% to $119.8 billion, with Google Cloud revenue surging 82% to $24.8 billion. Cloud operating income more than tripled to $8.8 billion, and backlog climbed to $514 billion. So far, growth is outpacing the depreciation bill.

The key question is whether cloud growth can sustain once the 2027 depreciation layer lands. If cloud cools while charges step up, earnings growth will be squeezed. The market is already cautious, with shares 18% below their 52-week high.

Hold Alphabet for its cloud growth, but watch for depreciation pressure from 2027.

The $200 billion capex is a double-edged sword: it fuels impressive cloud revenue growth (82% YoY) but will add $20 billion in annual depreciation from 2027. If cloud growth continues, the stock can perform well; if it slows, earnings will suffer. The market's 18% discount from highs reflects this uncertainty.

If you hold Alphabet shares, the near-term growth story remains intact, but be prepared for potential earnings pressure from 2027 onward. Investors with exposure to cloud competitors like Amazon or Microsoft should monitor whether Alphabet's spending forces them to increase capex, potentially compressing their margins as well.
